Stoneware, Bavaria-type (incised), 0.5L, inlaid lid.
This was a special order stein produced circa 1910 for the firm of Karl Schüssel, a Munich retailer. A stamp on the rear of the stein (below right) would appear to indicate that it was part of a series, but if so, no additional examples are currently known. The stein is marked “BAVARIA” on the base, as are all others produced by the Mettlach factory using this body style (i.e., #3282). Note, however, that except for this example, the “BAVARIA” designation was applied exclusively to steins with numbered transfer decorations, while the image on this stein is both unnumbered and incised.
