(Practiced in gymnastics, loved by his friends,
and happy when drinking beer, that is the gymnast’s virtue.)
Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse. The “4F” symbol above the central portrait, standing for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei” (Fresh, Pious, Happy, Free), represents the movement he began.
