(The seven Swabians hold a beer test.)
The drinkers depicted on this stein are taken from a medieval German legend about a colorful, if somewhat less than intrepid, band of “monster” hunters (“Die Sieben Schwaben”), who are perhaps best remembered today as the subjects of one of a series of “Household Tales” written in 1812 by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm. The “1519” probably makes reference to the the fact that the Swabian League was successful that year in expelling the unpopular Duke of Württemberg and replacing him, at least temporarily, with a Habsburg governor.
