This model number exists in two forms. Type 1 (right) is a late 19th century interpretation of a form that dates back to around 1550. Bearded man jugs (Bartmannkrüge) feature the face of a bearded man at the neck representing the mythical woodland Wild Man of Germanic folklore, a symbol of strength and endurance. Type 2 (below) replaces the bearded man with a frieze around the neck depicting dancing peasants, taken from prints by Renaissance engraver Hans Sebald Beham (1500-1550).
