This stein depicts an unnamed mountain in the Bavarian Alps, bearing marked trails to “Bairischzell” (or Bayrischzell), Birkenstein and “Branenburg” (or Brannenburg), three Bavarian Alpine villages. Perhaps its most eye-catching feature is the stein’s figural handle, formed in the shape of a “Tazlwurm” (or Tatzelwurm), sometimes called an “Alps Dragon”, a mythical lizard-like creature with the legless hind-end of a serpent, shown below emerging from the mountain and breathing fire.
