Rothenburg ob der Tauber was probably inhabited by Celts prior to the first century C.E., and today is a popular tourist destination known for its well-preserved medieval old town, including completely intact city walls. The stein’s central image depicts the Rathaus (town hall), parts of which date back to the 13th century. Side images include the Marksturm (Marcus Tower) overlooking one the town’s oldest defensive gates, and the iconic Plönlein, a medieval fountain square.
