Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934) was a German field marshal during World War I, winning a decisive engagement with Russia in the 1914 Battle of Tannenberg. At age 78, he came out of retirement to serve as the second president of the Weimar Republic (1925–34), and is perhaps best remembered in that role for his reluctant appointment of Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany.
