The image on this stein is taken from a poem entitled “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter (Werner) and a baron’s daughter (Margaretha). In this scene Werner surprises his lady love as she secretly attempts to play his trumpet.
