The three figures on this stein include: Germania (right), an ancient symbol personifying the strength, unity and liberty of Germanic peoples, taken from the Niederwalddenkmal, a monument erected near Rudesheim on the Rhine River following the Franco-Prussian War; Bavaria (below right), the female personification of the Bavarian state, taken from a bronze statue at the entrance to Munich’s Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame), commissioned by Ludwig I in the mid-19th century; and the Munich Child (below right), created as the coat-of-arms or archival seal of Munich in 1239, the Münchner Kindl has evolved from a hooded monk standing in front of Munich’s gate to a charming child and symbol of the city.
