The image in the top band of this stein, often seen on Girmscheid steins, is entitled “Pageant of King Gambrinus”. It has been suggested that the character Gambrinus may be drawn from the claimed real-life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th-century Belgian Duke and President of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.
The scenes surrounding the central band are taken from a variety of sources, including: “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, an epic poem written in 1853 by J. Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a baron’s daughter; “Die Lindenwirtin”, an 1876 poem by Rudolph Baumbach honoring Ännchen Schumacher, perhaps the most famous landlady/tavern keeper in German history and a popular figure with German students; “Die drei Röselein” (The Three Little Roses), a song composed in 1826 by Friedrich Silcher; and the 16th century Tannhäuserlied, later transformed into a Wagnerian opera, in which Tannhäuser (a minstrel knight) has an affair with Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and love, and lives with her for a time in Venusberg, her mountain retreat.
