Central image taken from an 1894 painting entitled “Heimkehr der Deutschen aus der Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald” (Return of the Germans from the Battle in Teutoburg Forest) by Paul Thumann (1834-1908).
In the Battle of Teutoburg Forest (9 A.D.) an alliance of Germanic tribes ambushed and annihilated three Roman legions, resulting in a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.
